Abstract

Linear approximations of apparent reflectance outside the atmosphere can be used to describe most of the observed atmospherically induced variation even at nominal optical depths of the order of unity. These approximations are employed to explicitly illustrate the information content of simulated (monochromatic) satellite reflectance measurements computed for a variety of urban and continental aerosol models. The aerosol models contain mixtures of absorbing soots, hydroscopic nitrate, and sulfate salts and nonhydroscopic dustlike particles. An inversion methodology for extracting generic aerosol parameters (scattering optical depth and single scattering albedo) as well as associated pollutant abundances (sulfates and carbonaceous soot) is evaluated and the error budget determined in terms of simple analytical expressions.
